Are there any legal constraints on how I can make something more accessible?

Answer

Unfortunately copyright law does limit how individuals and organisations can use, edit, or manipulate any published work. However, there are legal exceptions that permit the copying or conversion of a whole or part of a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work into a format which is accessible to a student with visual impairment.

The primary legal requirements of this exception are that the visually impaired person must have lawful possession or use of an original copyright work, i.e. to own, have borrowed from the library or have access to a reference copy.

We don't expect you to be legal experts, but if you are really interested in what you are legally permitted to do then take a look at our guidance on copyright and accessibility. There's more detailed information on the Accessible Copies page of our online Copyright Toolkit. If you need further help then you can also get in touch with our expert Student Wellbeing and Welfare team. There is much more information on their website.
