How should I format a longer quotation?
Answer
Citing a large piece of text isn’t always recommended, but sometimes it is necessary to include a longer quotation in your work. Longer quotations are quotes longer than approximately 40 words (usually four lines of prose or three lines of poetry). They are often referred to as a block quotation or block quote.
A block quote is introduced on a new line and is indented from the main text to show that it is distinct from the main body of your work. You can see more information and an example of how you should format a block quote in your required referencing style on Cite them right. See the Basics section for each style and click on ‘Setting out quotations’.
