How do I cite or reference a Kortext e-textbook?

Kortext e-textbooks include both print page numbers and digital page numbers and location indicators. Given how the e-textbook files are structured, you may not be able to see an exact page number but a page range instead.

Answer

You should always use the editable page range (i.e. the left-most, underlined set of page numbers in the navigation bar within the Kortext reader), as shown below in the red box:

This should exactly match those printed on the page of the hard-copy version and is also always the lowest set of numbers when multiple number ranges are displayed. You can also download a citation file to Refworks or Endnote which will include the page range of any selected text but usually not include a single page number. However, if you resize your browser window or use the Display Toolbar at the top of the screen to change the view to a single page layout, it is sometimes possible to make Kortext display a single page number at the bottom of the screen that you can then use in a reference or citation.

Kortext e-textbooks generally include digital page numbers and locations to help you navigate unnumbered page views such as the front matter and book covers. The files used within the Kortext reader are designed to ensure that text flows continuously like a webpage and reflows to automatically adjust to your screen size and device. This means that it is not usually possible to adjust the layout of pages within the Kortext Reader to exactly match the print version.

However, e-textbooks do undergo quality control to ensure page numbers match those in the print version. If you experience any difficulties navigating through an e-textbook, let us know and we will ask Kortext to check that particular title.
