How do I cite or reference a Kortext e-textbook?
Kortext e-textbooks include both print page numbers and digital page numbers and location indicators. Given how the e-textbook files are structured, you may not be able to see an exact page number but a page range instead.
Answer
You should always use the editable page range (i.e. the left-most, underlined set of page numbers in the navigation bar within the Kortext reader), as shown below in the red box:
This should exactly match those printed on the page of the hard-copy version and is also always the lowest set of numbers when multiple number ranges are displayed. If in doubt, you can also select or highlight the text you want to cite and select Create Citation under Study tools in the menu that appears:
Please note that this option does not yet appear in every Kortext title. The Create Citation window will display the exact page reference on which the selected text appears in a variety of referencing styles. Always cross check these citations with our Referencing LibGuide rather than relying completely on Kortext's in-built support.
Kortext e-textbooks generally include digital page numbers and locations to help you navigate unnumbered page views such as the front matter and book covers. The files used within the Kortext reader are designed to ensure that text flows continuously like a webpage and reflows to automatically adjust to your screen size and device. This means that it is not usually possible to adjust the layout of pages within the Kortext Reader to exactly match the print version.
However, e-textbooks do undergo quality control to ensure page numbers match those in the print version. If you experience any difficulties navigating through an e-textbook, let us know and we will ask Kortext to check that particular title.
