I’m not sure if my online source is a journal article (or paper) or a report?

Answer

Reference as a journal article or paper

Reference as a report

  • The journal’s name should be on the first page or possibly in the header or footer of each page.
  • You can then search for the journal and check the ‘about’ information. If it is peer reviewed then it should be an appropriate source to use in your assignment.
  • A report is more likely to be published on an organisation’s website. For example a government department (e.g. Department for Education), a non-governmental organisation (NGO, e.g. Amnesty International), a commercial company (e.g. Pfizer), or a professional body (e.g. Association of Clinical Psychologists UK).
  • Reports may also be available from online databases (e.g. market research reports).
  • It can also be helpful to identify the type of report you are looking at, for example a financial report, a law report or a research report. Some referencing styles will reference these items slightly differently.

  • Usually has named authors.
  • May also have named authors and the organisation may the publisher. Alternatively the organisation may be both the author and publisher.
