Why am I seeing a "You do not have access to this title..." error message when I try to access Kortext?

This error may occur if you try to access Kortext directly via an e-textbook's unauthenticated web address. Your tutor or lecturer may have inadvertently included an unauthenticated link to an e-textbook on your module ELE page. Clicking such a link will display the error message and you will be stopped from continuing through to the full text.

Your tutor or lecturer may also cite a title available via Kortext within a bibliography or reference list and include a web address directly to the Kortext book in their citation. Typing or copying and pasting this web address into your web browser will also result in the same error message being displayed and you will be unable to read the full text. In both cases, Kortext cannot authenticate your access correctly and will assume you are a member of the public.

Answer

To avoid this issue, you should always access Kortext content either via your electronic reading list or by searching for the title on Library Search. This is because the links to Kortext content in these places are correctly configured to allow Exeter students' and staff members' access.

Tutors and lecturers should not be included unauthenticated Kortext links anywhere in ELE. If you see this error message when trying to access a Kortext e-textbook from ELE, please get in touch with us and let us know:

  • The (module) ELE page you were looking at before you clicked through and saw the error message; and
  • The title(s) of the Kortext e-textbooks you are trying to access.

We'll then double check the ELE page and update the link you clicked so that it takes you through to the correct title.
