Why do I have to download an app in order to download e-books?

E-books and e-textbooks feature Digital Rights Management (DRM). This is how publishers enforce copyright compliance for their electronic publications. With most of our e-book suppliers, DRM means that e-books can only be read online. Others, however, allow you to read their content offline with an app such as Adobe Digital Editions that allows for continuous offline DRM.
